200-901 labs without a sandbox reservation
Compare browser exercises, local Python, and Cisco sandbox practice, and try a graded example using fixed data.
You can practice Python data handling and API-response analysis for Cisco® CCNA® Automation (200-901, formerly DevNet Associate) without reserving a sandbox. Fixed sample responses let you repeat a task and check the result. Live platform practice serves a different purpose: it adds the connection, permissions, and changing state of the actual environment.
Match the environment to the exercise
Suppose your function must read an inventory response and return the serial numbers of devices that meet a condition. You can test that function with a saved response. You do not need a live controller to discover that your loop returns after the first record or that you selected the wrong dictionary key.
You do need a suitable live environment to test whether the real account can call the endpoint, whether the platform returns the structure you expect, and how the request behaves under the conditions of that environment. Keeping these tasks separate makes it easier to identify what a failed test tells you.
| Practice option | Setup | Feedback | Contact with live services |
|---|---|---|---|
| RouteSwitchU browser exercises | Open the lesson and work with the supplied data. | The exercise checks the required result. | The required exercises use simulated data. |
| Local Python with saved responses | Install and configure your own tools. | Write tests or compare your result with an expected result. | None unless you add a live request. |
| Cisco developer learning resources | Check the requirements of the selected lab. | Review the instructions and checks provided by that lab. | Depends on the exercise. |
| Cisco sandbox environment | Follow the selected environment’s access instructions. | Validate the task you intend to perform. | Designed for access to the selected platform environment. |
Cisco maintains a Learning Labs catalog and a Sandbox catalog. Access conditions, included checks, and available environments vary. Check the individual listing rather than assuming every lab requires a reservation or every exercise runs entirely in a browser.
A practice sequence you can repeat
Use a small, non-sensitive example response. Write down the intended output before writing the function. Include a successful record, a record that should be excluded, and an empty result. If your task requires a field, decide what should happen when that field is absent instead of allowing an accidental exception to define the behavior.
Work through the first failure before changing several parts of the function. If a test expects two serial numbers and receives one, inspect the loop and condition. If it receives complete device records, inspect the return value. Once the tests pass, change the example data and explain why the expected result should change.
The repeated work is the useful part of a deterministic exercise. It gives you a known problem and an expected outcome so you can connect a code change to its result. Passing that exercise validates the behavior it checks. It does not certify a script for production use.
What the free RouteSwitchU demo lets you assess
The 200-901 Automation Exam Prep page includes a free graded exercise drawn from “Diagnosing a Failed Call.” Open the sample, read the instructions, and run the starter before editing it. Use the reported failures to decide what to inspect, then rerun the checks after making a change.
You can evaluate whether the instructions give you enough context, whether the feedback helps you locate the problem, and whether you understand the correction after the exercise passes. Basic Python is assumed. If functions, lists, and dictionaries are new to you, begin with Python Foundations.
The sample requires no course purchase or Cisco account. The full course’s required exercises also run in the browser, using fixed examples rather than your network credentials.
Add live practice when the task requires it
Before adapting practice code to a live service, read its current documentation and use an environment you are authorized to access. Verify authentication, permissions, timeouts, pagination, and error handling for that specific service. A teaching example cannot establish those conditions for your environment.
For the certification plan around these exercises, read the 200-901 exam guide. The CCNA Automation Knowledge Matrix identifies course topics that need additional study, including some practical tasks the browser course does not yet teach fully.
