The Catalyst 9800 configuration model, on a controller you run yourself.

You build and break the config yourself, on the shipping IOS-XE image. That covers tags and profiles, WLANs, AAA, mobility, services, and controller troubleshooting. The course is about the controller only. There is no virtual access point, so there is no radio work here, and the course says so up front.

Who should take this

You are moving to the 9800 from AireOS, or you have to configure one soon. You want to practice on a controller that is not in production.

What you will be able to do

  • Build a WLAN from the 9800 profile and tag model, instead of copying a working config.
  • Say which tag applies to an access point, and why, before you apply it.
  • Read controller state when a join fails and work out which layer is refusing.

You run the virtual controller yourself. Break a config, put it back, and nobody needs a change window.

The profile and tag model

This is the part of the 9800 that does not map onto AireOS. It is taught as a model, not as a config recipe.

An honest boundary

The first lesson says what the lab can and cannot show you. There is no virtual access point, and no course should pretend there is.

    What Cisco Modeling Labs costs, what a virtual 9800 actually is, and where it tells you the truth. You build the topology every later lesson runs on. Then you configure a feature the controller accepts and never runs. You meet that failure here instead of in a maintenance window.

  • Wireless experience. AireOS or another controller platform is enough.
  • A machine that can run the virtual controller. The first lesson lists what it needs.
